Chelsea survive scare

Carling Cup holders Chelsea had Frank Lampard to thank for surviving a major scare at Stamford Bridge after a stoppage time winner completed his hat-trick and helped overhaul a 3-2 deficit in the final ten minutes of a pulsating cup tie.

Two first-half goals from Lampard looked to have built a platform for a comfortable Chelsea victory but Leicester proved obdurate opponents in the face of sustained pressure.

The visitors had taken an early lead through a close range header in the opening ten minutes from captain Gareth McAuley.

However, Lampard struck twice in ten minutes before the break to put the home side in front and for long periods after that only some wayward finishing from Avram Grant's side and some excellent goalkeeping from Marton Fulop spared Leicester.

However, despite being under constant pressure, Leicester rode their luck and even came close to an equaliser when Carlo Cudicini fluffed a shot from Matt Fryatt only for the City striker to be flagged offside.

The equaliser did arrive with 20 minutes left of the 90 when second half substitute Dudley Campbell looped a header over Cudicini.

A game that had been decidedly one sided was then turned on its head when Carl Court gave Leicester the lead from close range after meeting Alan Sheehan's free-kick.

With ten minutes to left Grant called forth reinforcements with Michael Essien and Salomon Kalou summoned from the bench but it was the much maligned Shevchenko who grabbed the equaliser before the remarkable come back was finished off by Lampard in the dying moments of a breathless game.
